How to run a successful charity social media page: 6 of the best charity Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages
Last week, we looked at how to create an integrated social media strategy. This week, I’m going to look in more detail at some of the best charity social media pages – what works well and why they are successful.
(1) Dogs Trust Facebook page
Dogs Trust is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK. Along with advertising campaigns, they use social media to build profile and awareness.
Their Facebook statistics speak volumes, with 582,504 likes and a staggering 13,410 people talking about them.
Here’s how they do it:
- Great use of the Facebook layout, ensuring their cover photo clearly states their strapline.
- Clear mission, statistics and services list in the ‘about’ box at the top.
- Very easy to donate, with the ‘Donate Now’ badge easily visible.
- Content is posted frequently and is highly engaging, including appeals and mini case studies (eg 6 year old Barnie from Canterbury in screen shot above).
- Facebook page used to advertise events that they are hosting – an excellent idea for pages with lots of followers.
(2) Macmillan Cancer Research Facebook page
Macmillan Cancer Support is another charity that has a great following on Facebook.
Earlier on in the year, Macmillan Cancer Support held a Q and A with its interns through their Facebook page. This also lead them to advertise for new members of staff and volunteers – a great example of using Facebook to both promote what you do and use the power of your followers to appeal for support.
Macmillan Cancer Support also seeks regular, active engagement from its followers. Typical daily posts include:
- Thanking donators and supporters for raising money.
- Promoting events, both those held locally and nationally.
- Hosting competitions in order to raise money.
- Relevant information from the news section of their website.
- Appealing to followers to share their stories and encourage support.
- Asking questions and making it easy for followers to get involved – interaction is crucial, and this requires an understanding of what your followers are interested in and respond to.
(3) British Red Cross Twitter page
The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led humanitarian charity that helps people in the UK and abroad. As well as providing support to world disasters, the British Red Cross also holds first aid courses across the UK in order to improve public knowledge about what to do in a medical emergency.
With a staggering 88,963 followers, the British Red Cross Twitter account is an excellent example for any charity looking to engage and inspire Twitter followers to get involved with the charity.
British Red Cross regularly runs several campaigns and use Twitter to inform followers of them. It also tweets regularly with help and advice, such as ‘How to prepare for the floods…’ with website links to instant and relevant information. This interaction and thoughtfulness contributes to the page’s popularity.
British Red Cross actively encourages followers to get involved with their social media sites, with a section on their website specifically titled ‘Social Media’. It features information as to why followers should get involved and they directly ask followers to:
- Tell them your story
- Explain why you’re a supporter of the charity
- Promote events and sponsorship pages
- Share your photos and your experience with the charity.
Content-wise, I think British Red Cross is one of the best charity social media Twitter pages. You can see from this screenshot just how frequently British Red Cross tweets:
But how do they produce so much high quality content to post so regularly?
A review over a two-day period showed:
- Information regarding the recent flooding and which areas residents can find British Red Cross support.
- After the recent gas explosion in Essex, a tweet was posted notifying that a British Red Cross Support team was in the area providing physical and emotional support to anyone who needs it.
- A re-tweet of Red Cross South’s tweet regarding the recent gas explosion.
- Notifying followers of a recent donation that they have made.
The content is varied and interesting, but not repeated or similar. Each tweet provides followers with an insight into what is currently happening across the world and how British Red Cross are supporting and providing relief.
(4) Great Ormond Street Twitter account
Great Ormond Street has over 64,000 followers and has sent out over 15,000 tweets. I think it has created an enticing and attention-grabbing profile, which encourages followers to really look at the page:
- The bio is short, and precise.
- The logo profile picture is clear, their background picture is dynamic and sows what they do.
- The page is easy to navigate.
- Great Ormond Street tweets are frequent, relatable, interesting and informative.
- GOSH often uses Twitter to promote campaigns by informing followers how their donations can make a difference to families supported by the hospital.
An important point here about asking for donations: none of the charities I’ve featured use emotional blackmail or directly ask for money. This is key. Put yourself in the position of a follower: would you be more compelled to donate or support a charity if they provided you with information and encouraged you to get involved or if they simply tweeted asking for donations?
(5) Charity Water Instagram page
Charity Water has one simple mission: to bring clean and safe drinking water to every person in the world.
The charity uses Instagram to create an online account of projects, with frequent photo posts on the projects being carried out, and the difference they have made to communities across the globe. The images are mainly positive and happy.
While shock tactics can be effective at driving one-off donations, positive images have been shown to be more effective for long-term supporter engagement – and this is what you should be aiming for on your social media pages. High engagement also helps with search engine optimisation for charities, as search engines rank popular social media pages very highly.
Images (and viral videos) are a key way of reaching out to people and emotionally engaging with them to encourage donations or them to invest time in you. Charity Water is an excellent example of how images can be used in a positive way.
(6) Amnesty UK Instagram page
Amnesty UK posts images related to campaigns or related issues. Again, none of the images are used to shock, but are instead focused on educating about the work they do.
Whilst Charity Water has over 1,000 followers, Amnesty UK has over 7,000 followers. The overall layout of the Amnesty UK Instagram page is effective and intriguing to potential followers.
The profile page top banner is a collage of images, with the logo clearly prominent as the profile picture.
Like Facebook and Twitter profiles, Instagram profiles need to be 100% complete and as engaging as possible.
Amnesty UK posts images relating to ongoing or successful campaigns, acting like a news feed as well as a set of images.
In the example below, the image top left of the screen states that the UK will now be accepting the most vulnerable refugees from Syria. Then, when the image has been posted, Amnesty UK has created a caption thanking those supporters for making this possible.
“Thanks to your actions, the UK government has u-turned and will accept some of the most vulnerable #syria refugees! Well done everyone! #goodnews #success #amnestyinternational”
This interaction with followers encourages likes and other Instagram users to follow the account.
