Barack Obama criticised the spread of fake news through Facebook at a recent press release, everyone has been talking about it – with stories reported on major news websites such as The Guardian, BBC News and The Independent.
Facebook, and social media in general, is becoming more and more influential every day, attracting 176 million new social media users last year. This was demonstrated earlier this month during the U.S. Presidential election, where fake news stories were spread across social media – with 38% of news stories across three hyper partisan right-wing Facebook accounts being fake news! In the current digital age, blogging and PR are some of the most effective ways to promote your brand – a successful article could gain your business thousands of views and new followers. If your readers then discover that your article, or certain facts in your article, are false, it could ruin the credibility of your brand.
Credibility is one of the most important factors in the success of your business – after all, if you lack brand credibility, how can you expect your potential customers to trust you enough to buy from you?

Whilst this by itself won’t necessarily increase the credibility of your brand, using catchy headlines can help attract people to your article in the first place. Including numbers (e.g. 9 top tips) or how-to’s in the headline can catch people’s eyes. Mentioning relevant topics and using keywords in your headline can also be a very effective way of attracting people to your article. Here are some other ways you can write an attractive headline.
People often include facts and figures in articles as it is a proven way of building credibility, but if you include any in your article, make sure to check they come from a reliable source. If your fact does not come from a reliable source, then a simple Google search should be enough to figure out whether it’s true or not. If you still can’t find out whether the fact you are using is reliable, it’s probably safer to just not include it.
Another way of increasing brand credibility through blog writing is by including reliable backlinks in your articles. Not only will linking to a reliable source demonstrate your knowledge on the subject, but whoever you link to may even share your article in return.
Have you considered featuring articles from guest bloggers? Asking industry experts to write for your blog can do wonders for your brand credibility. It’s easy enough to come up with a selection of experts in your industry and send them an email asking if they’d be interested in writing a blog that would feature on your website. The amount of people who agree to write a blog for you would surprise you – but you’re providing them with a backlink to their website in return, which means the blog is beneficial to both parties.
Sharing reliable news
Another easy way of increasing brand credibility can simply be sharing other reliable news. You can just do this on your social media platforms, and your followers will take notice that you’re up to date on all the latest news and trends. Certain brands may even share your articles in return.
In summary, if you want to stand out from fake news and establish brand credibility, producing reliable articles is one of the easiest ways. Even if your articles aren’t gaining lots of views or engagement, quality is always better than quantity, particularly if you are using blogging and content marketing to establish yourself as a thought leader in your areas of expertise.
