Wordpress_logo_8A new year, a new website or blog? If you are planning to develop a business blog this year, then you’ve come to the right place. Blogging is big business these days. By adding regular new content to your blog there’ll be more of an incentive for customers to come back again and again and engage with your business.

The business benefits of blogs

Blogging can be daunting at first, but with these quick start tips I can help guide you through the first steps to help you create a fantastic website and a blog with great content.

There are many platforms out there, but my recommendation is to use WordPress. It’s not just fantastic to work with and feature packed, it’s one of the most sociable. So if you’re in the market for engaging customers and getting plenty of comments on your blog to keep the conversation going, you can’t go wrong with WordPress.

Design a Website with WordPress

The first thing to take into account is what you’d like on your pages. Having a good strategic website and blog plan before you start to build is the best option. The basics to think about are:

  • Page content (devise a sitemap and editorial calendar)
  • Social media links (one-click share/recommend icons for Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ etc)
  • Online product shop (would you like people to buy straight from your website?)

These three simple options will ensure that you’re prepared to make the right choices when you decide on your final WordPress web design.

There are two options; WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.com is perfect for those who want a quick start and set up. There are hundreds of free or cheap themes and templates that you can choose from. However, there are functionality restrictions on the free template versions: you can’t set up a shop direct from your page, and some features such as Javascript won’t work, which isn’t great if you wish to embed media for example.

WordPress.org has all the features of .com but it is far more customisable. Its software that’s free to download and has the option of thousands of plug-ins.

Alternatively you can ask a website developer to develop the blog for you or embed it into your existing website. The design can be tailored to your exact requirements so as to follow your existing website design or a new design of your choice.

Design WordPress Blog: creating content

A blog is an opportunity to provide critical opinion on industry topics and to add value to your products and services offer. Whereas website content is generally information based, blogs can be used to generate conversations and debate. Blog content is shared much more regularly than website page content, which is great for both your social media profile and your search engine rankings.

This is the part of your WordPress website where you can show the face behind the business and engage with your customers like you aren’t able to do over other mediums.

Writing blogs doesn’t come easy to everyone but by having a few topics to go back to you can make yours a success. You can offer advice and tips from the chosen area you work in, highlight products or review services that your customers may wish to use. Blogs are becoming more popular as people like to feel like they know the person behind the business and trust their opinions rather than through targeted marketing such as more formal company press releases.
